Mithun Chakraborty is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announces X that Mithun Chakraborty is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, celebrated for his legendary performances in films like Mrigayaa, Surakshaa, Disco Dancer, and Dance Dance, has been awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema. The announcement was made on Monday by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, through a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In his announcement, Vaishnaw expressed, “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! I am honored to share that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”
The award, a momentous occasion in the Indian film industry, will be conferred upon Chakraborty during the highly anticipated 70th National Film Awards ceremony scheduled for October 8.

Mithun Chakraborty, 74, began his illustrious acting career with Mrigayaa, directed by the esteemed filmmaker Mrinal Sen, in 1976. His performance in this film, a powerful portrayal that earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, marked the beginning of a successful journey in the film industry. Over the years, he has captivated audiences with his transformative and memorable performances in various films, including Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki and Commando.
Chakraborty’s contributions to Indian cinema have made him a beloved figure and an inspiration for aspiring actors and filmmakers across generations.

The award will be conferred upon Mithun Chakraborty during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, set to take place on October 8, 2024. Mithun Chakraborty, born on June 16, 1950, embarked on his remarkable acting career in 1977 with his debut film, Mrigayaa, which garnered him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. However, it was his 1982 hit Disco Dancer that propelled him to iconic status, turning him into a sensation throughout Asia, the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa.

Throughout his career, Mithun Chakraborty has acted in numerous films spanning different genres, such as Agneepath, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Pasand Apni Apni, Ghar Ek Mandir, and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, among others. In recent years, he has appeared in films like OMG: Oh My God.

Mithun Chakraborty has acted in over 270-300 films and built a diverse portfolio spanning Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi and Bhojpuri cinema. His immense popularity abroad, especially in Eastern Europe and Russia, earned him the title of “Indian Cinema’s last superstar”.

Alongside his accomplishments in film, Mithun Chakraborty has received multiple National Film Awards and holds a Limca World Record for the highest number of film releases in a single year. He has also been actively engaged in social initiatives, especially in raising awareness about thalassemia.
