Scheduled for 11 am on Tuesday, Jack Wighton will stand before the cameras at South Sydney’s Heffron Park training facility in Maroubra, ready to tackle the challenging questions surrounding his team’s current predicament.

The inquiry revolves around Coach Jason Demetriou’s ability to maintain control of the dressing room and whether Latrell Mitchell has failed his club. However, the most demanding queries may come from within Rabbitohs HQ itself, directed at Wighton’s close friend and teammate, Latrell Mitchell. Mitchell will engage in candid discussions with senior club figures, delving into concerns regarding his mindset and commitment to steering the club back to NRL supremacy.

While this meeting has been on the agenda for the past two weeks, recent events have significantly altered its focus. Mitchell’s three-game suspension, resulting from an egregious lapse in judgment as he struck Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson with an inadvertent elbow to the head, has prompted a crucial shift in discussion topics.

“The meeting had been arranged well in advance of the match against the Warriors,” stated Chief Executive Blake Solly when contacted by the Herald on Monday afternoon. “Everyone within the club is committed to maximizing Latrell’s performance on the field this season.”

No one embodies this commitment more than Demetriou, who will hold a separate meeting with Mitchell to convey a straightforward message: he must improve.

Previously, Demetriou faced criticism for not holding Mitchell accountable and allegedly granting preferential treatment to the New South Wales and Australian representative. These allegations played a part in club legend Sam Burgess’s departure before their final game of the previous season.

However, Demetriou is acutely aware that South Sydney cannot afford to have Mitchell sidelined for extended periods, especially during a crucial phase when they are battling to salvage their season.

South Sydney officials have continuously defended Mitchell against public and media scrutiny, but even they have reached their limit with their star player due to his recent on-field behavior and performance against the Warriors.

While the club fully supports Mitchell’s off-field endeavors, particularly his advocacy on Indigenous issues, they cannot allow it to compromise the club’s interests. The club has made significant financial and strategic investments in him.

Mitchell will now have an opportunity to contemplate his standing within the club and the sport as he serves his time on the sidelines. He will be reminded that his actions have let down both his team and the club, and he must regain their trust through his conduct.

South Sydney had been pleased with Mitchell’s dedication during the off-season, where he achieved his lowest playing weight since joining the club. They were confident he was poised for a successful season.

Unfortunately, Mitchell has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons since the beginning of South Sydney’s 2024 campaign in Las Vegas over a month ago.
